Do you need three apps to add product photos to Shopify?

Ask how to add a batch of new product photos to Shopify and the usual answer is a combination: one tool to match the photos, one to create the missing products, one for alt text and SEO, sometimes one more for formats. Here is what each step involves, what a single app can do instead, and when the combination is still the better choice.

The usual answer: several tools, one step each

Adding new photos to a Shopify store is rarely a single job. Recommendations in forums, guides and AI assistants usually split it into steps, with a tool for each.

Step Usual tool What you do
Resize, convert, remove camera data An image editor or a compression app Export every photo at the right size and format
Match photos to products An image uploader app Rename each file with the SKU or handle, then upload
Create the products that don’t exist yet Shopify’s product CSV import, or by hand Fill in a spreadsheet with an image address for each photo
Alt text and file names An alt text app, or by hand Generate or write one text per image, then check it
SEO title and meta description of new products An SEO app, or by hand Write two texts per product
Check the main images The Shopify admin Open each product page

Each tool does its job well. The work is in the gaps between them.

Where the time goes

  • Several naming rules. The uploader wants the SKU or handle in the file name, the spreadsheet wants a product title per row, and each tool has its own format to follow.

  • Images online before the import. Shopify’s product CSV import doesn’t take files from your computer: each image must already be online at a public address, which Shopify downloads during the import.

  • Order matters. Products have to exist before photos can be matched to them, and alt text is usually written after the images are in the store.

  • The main image. Depending on the tool, new photos can land first and replace the main image of a product that already had one.

  • Checking everything. With several tools, the only way to be sure is to open each product page at the end.

For a few products, that’s fine. For a new collection of dozens of products, it adds up to hours of repetitive work.

The same steps with one app

Dropmatch, a Shopify app published by Aryios, covers the photo side of these steps in a single pass:

  • Drop the whole folder. No spreadsheet and no public image addresses: the photos go straight from your computer.

  • Matching. Photos are matched to your products by file name, folder name, product title, SKU or barcode. Uncertain matches wait for your decision.

  • Missing products. Photos with no matching product can become new draft products, with an SEO title and meta description written from the photos.

  • Ready-to-use files. Photos are resized to 1024, 2048 or 4096 px, converted to WebP or JPEG, and cleaned of camera and location data.

  • Alt text and file names. Each photo gets alt text and an SEO file name, in your store’s language, following your brand rules.

  • Main images protected. New photos are added after the existing ones. Existing SEO titles and meta descriptions are never overwritten.

  • Review, then send. Nothing goes to your store before you’ve approved it, and a whole batch can be undone afterwards.

What one app doesn’t replace

A single app doesn’t cover everything, and it’s better to know it before choosing.

  • Product descriptions. Dropmatch never writes them. Shopify’s built-in AI assistant can draft them in the admin.

  • Prices, stock and variants. Use the Shopify admin, or a CSV import for many products at once.

  • Images already in your store. Dropmatch works on the photos you drop into it. To add alt text to images that are already online, you need an app that edits existing images, or the admin.

  • Images per variant. Photos are added to the product. Assigning an image to each colour or size is done in the Shopify admin.

Which setup fits your store

  • Your catalogue exists and new photos arrive regularly (new collections, colourways, restocks): one app for the photos is usually enough.

  • You’re moving a whole catalogue from another platform, with prices, variants and descriptions: start with a CSV import for the product data, then add the photos.

  • You only want to improve the alt text of images already online: an alt text app that edits existing images is the right tool.

To see named apps side by side, read Shopify apps for product photos compared.

Whichever setup you choose, the basics don’t change: one folder per product or an identifier in each file name, a consistent size and ratio, and a check of the main images. The step-by-step guide to uploading many product photos covers them in detail, and what to write in alt text explains the texts themselves.

Frequently asked questions

Does Dropmatch replace a product CSV import?

Not entirely. A CSV import is the right tool for product data: prices, stock, variants, descriptions. Dropmatch handles the photos: it matches them to your products, creates draft products for photos with no match, and writes alt text, file names and the SEO of new products. Many stores use both.

Does Dropmatch write product descriptions?

No. It never writes or changes your product descriptions. Shopify’s built-in AI assistant can draft them in the admin, or you can write them yourself.

What if my file names mean nothing, like IMG_4821?

Put the photos in one folder per product, named like the product, or add a SKU or barcode to each file name. Dropmatch can also suggest a match from what’s in the image, but a suggestion is only sent once you’ve confirmed it.

Will it change my existing images or SEO?

No. New photos are added after the product’s existing images, so the main image stays the same. On existing products, the SEO title and meta description are only filled in when they’re empty, never overwritten.

Can I keep the apps I already use?

Yes. Dropmatch only works on the photos you drop into it. It doesn’t change anything that other apps manage, and a batch can be undone.

Do it for all your photos at once.

Dropmatch matches each photo to its product and writes its alt text and SEO file name. You review everything before it's sent.
